The play is set in the forests somewhere in Primorska region. The main protagonist Matjaž decides to join the national liberation fight, leaving behind his son, pregnant wife and the rest of his family. He joins the partisans whilst his family is betrayed and killed by the fascists. Matjaž's comrades try to keep this from him. But when he finds out the truth, he takes his own life, convinced he is to blame for their death.
